The Association

The main purpose of “MRUV Project” is to create a European network comprising Universities, research institutes and Companies, as well as to promote the construction of means and structures intended for scientific research and its promotion, within the maritime and underwater sectors. Through research, “MRUV project” aims to foster cooperation between the academic and industrial worlds, facilitating the transfer of technologies and knowledge between the two, for the benefit of society.

The association will operate toward the achievement of this purpose, through:

Signing agreements with a network of institutes interested in partaking in research activities or in funding the organization

Carrying out fundraising activities to finance the association’s operational activities.

Communicating results from research activities to foster awareness on issues like the effect of climate change, the health of the marine ecosystem, the impact of various economic activities on biodiversity of the seas and the protection of the underwater-archaeological heritage.

In Practice?

The official constitution of the association represents the start of a journey with an ambitious destination, towards which all the members of the team have decided to embark, with the determination and desire to contribute personally to create a different future.

A future that today is frightening and that in 2015 led the governments of 193 UN member countries to mobilize, signing an action programme for people, planet, and prosperity: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Now more than ever, we realize how vulnerable we are and how much our well-being depends on the balance of the ecosystems in which we live.

The constant degradation of the marine ecosystem, the pollution of the seas and the loss of biodiversity are increasingly evident and their consequences more worrying.

For this reason, we are now trying to build a European network of universities, research centers and companies, which, believing in the importance of scientific research and international collaboration, will be able to enable us to realize this project and have the necessary support to apply for the funds to carry it out.

In Practice?

The main effort will be directed towards the construction of a large multi-role research vessel with hybrid propulsion (gas, hydrogen, batteries), based in Venice, named RV Radamantis. The vessel will be an innovative scientific investigation tool, managed in Italy by the participating European bodies. In addition to an hybrid propulsion, the second major feature of this vessel will be the extensive use of modular design to ensure versatility, effectiveness and resilience.

The design and consequent construction of the headquarters will be indispensable to allow the logistical-organizational direction of the missions research. Moreover, the headquarters will provide technical-specialist assistance and it will equip ground-based scientific staff with offices, classrooms and laboratories.

While configuried as a multi-role vessel, the main research focus of the RV Radamantis will be the study of climate change, the safeguard of marine ecosystems, the geological mapping of seabed and underwater-archaeological research. Its range of action will be mainly the Mediterranean basin. The project will act within an overarching framework promoted by the European Union, which aims at the strengthening of research as part of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

A preliminary step will consist in creating an independently managed network and, in a second time, consortium, composed of European universities, institutions and companies. This consortium will favor responsive management, transparent planning and resolute choice of priorities.

THE VESSEL

VISION

To create universal scientific access to knowledge regarding the Mediterranean marine ecosystem, including its biodiversity, natural resources and submerged cultural heritage. This in turn, will favour its monitoring, conservation and enhancement of such resources.

  • Research is key for building knowledge that can lead to awareness and action toward climate change mitigation and ecosystem protection.

MISSION

Designing, building and structuring the most resilient and technologically advanced multi-role research vessel ever conceived in Europe.

Encouraging collaboration between governments, public and private bodies for the creation of common solutions to universal problems promoting scientific research and technological innovation.

Disseminating results from scientific research with the aim of fostering a radical cultural change by raising awareness in the public.

MISSION

VALORI
